More to come.

Links to other sites:

http://www.gifwizard.com/ analyzes your site for "bloated gifs," among other sins.
http://www.landfield.com/faqs/jpeg-faq/part1/ is a tutorial on JPEG, with lots of links.
www.designer-info.com/Writing/bmp_tiff_jpeg_gif.htm is a shorter tutorial on file formats, including BMP and TIFF.

Use your favorite search engine (try jpeg AND gif) to find lots more. (Yahoo.com, altavista.com, excite.com, google.com, lycos.com, northernlight.com among others.)

Using shareware frrom http://www.webattack.com/shareware/gmm/swgcomp.shtml, I compressed the images used in the long page on Text Texts. In about an hour's work, I cut the download time about in half. I can detect no difference in quality, as viewed in a browser. If I pushed as far as possible, i.e., give up a little quality, this could be reduced by another third.
